A Real Trip : Oh the Places You'll Go

Sure he's tired, and we've all nodded off at inappropriate times, but you can't ignore the timing.
Fast asleep during an MLK Day speech with less than a week until the South Carolina primary... I can't help but wonder if this is a view of a man so comfortable with his position within the African American community that he has the luxury of napping.
As a white guy who believes Obama has more to offer the country than Clinton, I'm encouraged by the support Obama has received in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada by the diverse, yet predominately white community, but I am shocked by the fact that the an old white guy and his wife seem to believe that they better represent the black community than the BLACK guy AND the people appear to be buying it... at least if you believe the media.
Do I believe that Obama would better represent the black voters?
Yes.
Do I believe he has a connection with the black voters that I don't understand as a white person?
Yes.
Do I believe he's smart enough to make choices that better serve the country regardless of race?
Yes
I didn't believe 10 years ago that a black candidate would be president in my lifetime. After the rhetoric of Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton I didn't see a candidate who could emerge that would be able communicate a vision for the country that wasn't dripping with racial ideology and whose support wasn't incubated in the African American community.
Is this why he hasn't won over the black voters? Because he didn't define himself by the community? Because, in many ways he transcended the ideas of that community during the past 20 years?
Of course he recognizes the inequities within the black community, but understands that much of the continued hardship they endure is related to education and economics and not just race. This is an position that can be made across minority communities nationally.
I can't imagine Obama, surrounded by Veterans, snoozing off at a Memorial day speech in Iowa and expecting to muster the support needed to win a primary.
But maybe I'm just too white to understand.

Did you ever wonder why Buckwheat was one of the Little Rascals? Was it emblematic of the racial animus of the 1930’s? Or was it . . .

In the days preceding the New Hampshire primary I was elated. Drudge was reporting how Clinton staffers were looking for other jobs after the Iowa . . .
After reading Dan O'Byrne's post, "Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses," I thought I would revisit our Nation's immigration history with some iconic images. . . .
Any have any idea how much Osama Bin Laden artwork is worth? I found this piece while relieving myself at the Old Key Lime House . . .

I remember the autumns of my youth in upstate New York—mostly for the colorful leaves. One leaf, in particular, comes to mind. It was the . . .
