I screamed in horror when they read the verdict in the trial of O.J. Simpson.

I had been glued to the television for weeks, transfixed by what the spectacle seemed to be revealing about our nation. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. You knew it was coming. You knew it was tragic. But there wasn’t anything you could do to stop it.

I had to get out of the house, away from that damn TV set. To the grocery store. As I waited for my receipt, I listened to a few black girls talking in a dialect I’d always made a point of ignoring. They were gleeful about the verdict. Gleeful?

The trial had become one of the defining moments for race relations in this country. Why? The trial was never supposed to be about race. How could blacks in numbers wildly . . .

  This Is Spinal Tap, I'm Not There, Anything with Will Ferrell,, But mostly, I go for weighty, thought-provoking films.

Music:
  Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen (his pre-communist work), U2, Van Morrison, Frank Sinatra, and Sirius Satellite Radio picks my new stuff.

Books:
  I find these fascinating. I can sit and think about reading one all day. . . . but seriously, I love Tom Wolfe and John Irving--even if they hate one another. I tend toward nonfiction, perhaps creative nonfiction. Memoirs, self-improvement, and spiritual or religious writings.
